For too long, our industry has shielded away from addressing all the needs of people living with cancer. Ignorance and a lack of knowledge has impeded salon/spa professionals from helping these cancer fighters and survivors – the very people who may benefit most from salon/spa services. When you consider as many as four in ten people will get cancer in their lifetimes – there is a demand based on the staggering reality of 23.6 million potentially new cases of cancer each year by 2030.
The trainings offered by Oncology Training International (OTI) have been revolutionizing the salon/spa industry since 2007; and OTI continues to be a driving force to change this approach. ONCOLOGY ESTHETICS TRAINING
The Oncology Esthetics Basics Training is a comprehensive, advanced training for Estheticians in-training or Estheticians in-practice that are motivated to make a positive difference and experience to individuals diagnosed with cancer. This is a course designed to provide an esthetician with knowledge on the pathophysiology of cancer, the various treatments of cancer, and the effects of cancer and its treatments on the skin and body. The training explores both the physical and emotional effects of cancer. The candidate that chooses this program is someone that wants to learn to adapt their existing esthetic services to accommodate the oncology population during active cancer treatment and during recovery. The candidate may have been through cancer treatments themselves, been a caregiver to someone going through treatments, or have family or friends that have experienced cancer. This course mainly focuses on basic skin care and facials, however with the knowledge provided in this course, an esthetician will be able to apply the information to various esthetic treatments.
This program will be a combination of theory and practical application. Students will first practice some techniques/modifications to treatments required for cancer survivors on each other for the first 3 days.
*Models will then be required on day 4 or 5 in the afternoon (time to be determined on the first day of the program). Your model will need to be a cancer survivor (someone who has been through treatments or is currently going through treatments).
To achieve certification in this program, students are required to attend the full 5 day class, as well as complete assignments that will be submitted for review once the 5 day course is complete. These assignments will include a case study on a cancer survivor, an open book exam, and a 1500 word research paper on a topic of your choice related to oncology esthetic care (more detailed information to be provided in class).
Pre-requisites: certification in facials (must have knowledge of the skin, skin types, skin conditions, lymphatic system); Moodle pre-courses/tests done at least one week prior to attending class (these pre-course requirements will include review of the skin, skin types/conditions, lymphatic system).

Meet Your Instructor ANGELA ROWLAND
Angela’s career started first in health care. She graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and worked as a Registered Nurse for 14 years, with the bulk of those years spent as a Diabetes Educator. After 14 years she made the decision to transition to the world of esthetics. She trained in clinical esthetics and worked awhile in the spa industry before going back to school yet again to get her esthetics diploma from The Esthetic Institute of Calgary. Angela also holds a certification in Oncology Esthetics as well as Advanced Pedicures and provides safe and approved Oncology treatments at The Esthetic Institute Spa. Working with people is all she has ever wanted to do and is honoured to be an educator at TEI.
Meet Your Instructor LISA GULLACE
Certified Esthetician, Certified Oncology Esthetic, Linfo Skin Taping Expert
Luisa is a certified Esthetician, graduating in Italy in 1986. She began her career shortly after and has more than 30 years of experience as an Esthetician and spa owner, working in both Italy and Canada. Daring to move beyond the realm of traditional esthetics, Luisa has specialized her treatment offerings in skin and body imperfections, severe acne, rosacea, dehydration, wrinkles, elasticity, hypertrichosis, body and face oedema, lower and upper limbs water retention, localized fat and cellulite. Creating customized, result driven esthetic programs for clients is a passion of Luisa’s and part of her professional ability that she prides herself in.
Luisa later expanded her esthetic services in the specialized treatment of Oncology Esthetics by helping cancer patients. In addition, she works with clients affected by diabetes, lymphedema and lipedema as well as severe acne.
In 2009, Luisa moved to Canada and in 2013 graduated as an Oncology Esthetician by attending O.T.I. (Oncology Training International), facilitated by founder Morag Currin. In 2014, Luisa furthered her studies in Italy, taking the Italian language version the O.T.I. training at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan taught by Angela Noviello. In addition, she studied the “Salute allo Specchio”, (Health in the Mirror), psychological clinic program, delivered by Dott. Valentina Di Mattei. Luisa took additional advanced training in Oncology in 2015 and again in 2022 under the direction of Morag Currin at The Esthetic Institute Training Center. She very much looks forward to sharing her extensive knowledge with her students and inspiring them to make a difference in the lives of their clients.
